  • December 24, 2019

Did you finish your Christmas shopping? Did you prep your holiday meal? Me. I did nothing! I have a family that loathe tradition Christmas foods and who loves to shop after the holidays are done. We tend to do Christmas a little different in our neck of the woods, but nevertheless, I managed to dibble in some makeup and shoe purchases recently and had the chance to explore shimmers and glitters with my most recent subscription. Today, we will talk about December’s IPSY glam bag. Let’s take a look inside.

Back in the Classroom: My ESL Teaching Journey
  • November 11, 2019

As many of you know, I am a teacher! Kind of the obvious with homeschooled children, huh? Well, in addition to teaching my own children, I decided to go back into the classroom. Since I resigned from one of the most fulfilling roles (outside of motherhood, of course) as a preschool assistant teacher, I’ve been looking for ways to influence and teach. For about 2 years, I’ve flirted with the idea of working from home. My main concern was being scammed. I was so fearful of the thought of being misused. After all of the research, conversations with my husband and praying, I completed my application to become an online ESL teacher.

ESL- English as a Second Language. I was nervous about this title. Do I have to speak another language to interact with my students? Will they understand the lessons I teach. How can they learn from me? I had so many questions. I will begin a new series of my journey as a VIPKid teacher. I will walk you through the application process, interviewing process, hiring process and teaching in the classroom. My goal is to make things easy for you to understand the ends and outs of this wonderful company. Today, we will explore the question: “What is VIPKid?”

What is VIPKid?

VIPKid is an online English language-learning company for children in China that started in 2013. The four founders believed there was a more effective way to teach a foreign language than the rote memorization often offered in Chinese schools. So, they created VIPKid as a way to integrate English learning with creativity, curiosity, critical thinking, and, most importantly, fun!

VIPKid connects each student to an American or Canadian teacher for 25-minute, one-on-one lessons from the comfort of their home. The classes are intended to be fun, educational and offer full immersion (i.e., only English is spoken). Students range from ages 2 (yes, you read correctly) to 13 and learn not only the language but about American culture and traditions.

Today, VIPKid is one of the most lucrative online jobs in the market. There are more than 500,000 students and 90, 000 teachers within the company. Read this Forbes article about the growth and success of this wonderful company!

Where to start?

Great question! VIPKid is quite straight forward with their expectations and requirements. Before you apply, do you qualify?

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in any field. I am asked this question the most. No, you don’t need a teaching degree to teach with VIPKid. Although, having an educational background is a plus especially working with children. Which brings us to…
  2. Teaching Experience. As a mom and an educator, this is an easy yes but as an average person, this may not have been your profession. If you are experienced with children in any way (Sunday School, Daycare, babysitting, etc) you can apply. You must have at least a year’s worth of experience.
  3. You must be eligible to work in the US or Canada with a preferred (North American) English accent. Although there are people who work outside of these two countries, there are expectations of them as well.

So do you think you qualify? You can apply today!!

Spanish Month with the Burns
  • October 21, 2019

If you know us or have been following this blog for any amount of time, you know we love to learn and take chances on education and adventure. This month is no different. We have taken the initiative (or at least attempt) to speak Spanish the entire month of October. This is how it would work:

Every communication via text message or email within our family will be in Spanish.

Every entertainment (video or movie) must be in Spanish. Subtitles in English are permitted. The only time where this is excused is during learning hours.

So we’ve had a strange time, to say the least, but it is amazing to see how we are able to associate actions with the Spanish phrases we learn. We sit together as a family and watch Spanish education videos and send language videos via Google Hangouts so we are always learning. We’ve also incorporated Word of the Days.

My children enjoyed a Netflix series titled “Raising Dion”. You would think they would be turned off by having to watch it in Spanish, but they were episodes in and were thoroughly enjoying it. But then it finally happened…

So today, October 21, we didn’t succeed in Spanish month. We completely failed! LOL

Dad was caught watching a movie… IN ENGLISH! The kids were excited because if dad couldn’t do it, they didn’t have to. Spanish month was officially canceled on October 14!

Parents, have you ever challenged your family and it went awry? Please share your fails below! We’ve all had them!

My First Beauty Subscription: What’s Inside
  • October 14, 2019

I don’t know about you, but I feel like a kid in a candy store! I’ve always wanted to have a beauty subscription but haven’t found the energy and time to dedicate to experimenting with it. Now that my children are a little older and more independent, I have some time to play in makeup and test skincare products.

For years, I’ve flirted with the idea of subscribing to a monthly makeup service and last month, I finally did it. Right now, I am subscribed to IPSY. IPSY is one of the first makeup/beauty subscriptions founded by the one and only Michelle Phan, the original beauty guru of YouTube’s humble beginnings when experimenting, trial and error and complete fails were openly accepted and educational.

Today, I will walk you through the items I received in September’s bag!

September’s Find Your Light Bag

BENEFIT COSMETICS Gimme Brow+ Volumizing Eyebrow Gel

This is a water-resistant gel loaded with microfibers to fill sparseness, add definition and shape brows.

Next is HANHOO Watermelon Illuminator Overnight Serum

This serum is made with a mix of superfruits to nourish, hydrate, and refine your skin texture while you sleep.

MURAD Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisturizer

This rich skin saver is infused with shea butter, sunflower seed oil, coconut fruit extract, and avocado oil to instantly moisturize, reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve your skin texture

OFRA COSMETICS OFRA x Madison Oh My Ry Ry Liquid Lipstick

This is a highly pigmented liquid lipstick that evenly coats the lips in a gorgeous mauve color that won’t feather or fade. (We shall see about that!)

PHASE ZERO MAKE-UP Satin Eyeshadow in Velvet

This claims to be a no-fuss makeup. This color, Velvet is a luminous shade that goes on sheer but can be layered for drama. Plus, pigment stays put for hours.

I am totally new to reviewing makeup. I barely know how to use products, but as a novice, I think this would be the perfect opportunity to experiment and see if an everyday woman like myself can pull off a look. Have you subscribed to a makeup service? What are your thoughts? Comment below!

I will be reviewing the bags on my Instagram page. So follow me!! https://www.instagram.com/hisproverbs1822/

See you there!
