As many of you know, I am a teacher! Kind of the obvious with homeschooled children, huh? Well, in addition to teaching my own children, I decided to go back into the classroom. Since I resigned from one of the most fulfilling roles (outside of motherhood, of course) as a preschool assistant teacher, I’ve been looking for ways to influence and teach. For about 2 years, I’ve flirted with the idea of working from home. My main concern was being scammed. I was so fearful of the thought of being misused. After all of the research, conversations with my husband and praying, I completed my application to become an online ESL teacher.

ESL- English as a Second Language. I was nervous about this title. Do I have to speak another language to interact with my students? Will they understand the lessons I teach. How can they learn from me? I had so many questions. I will begin a new series of my journey as a VIPKid teacher. I will walk you through the application process, interviewing process, hiring process and teaching in the classroom. My goal is to make things easy for you to understand the ends and outs of this wonderful company. Today, we will explore the question: “What is VIPKid?”

What is VIPKid?

VIPKid is an online English language-learning company for children in China that started in 2013. The four founders believed there was a more effective way to teach a foreign language than the rote memorization often offered in Chinese schools. So, they created VIPKid as a way to integrate English learning with creativity, curiosity, critical thinking, and, most importantly, fun!

VIPKid connects each student to an American or Canadian teacher for 25-minute, one-on-one lessons from the comfort of their home. The classes are intended to be fun, educational and offer full immersion (i.e., only English is spoken). Students range from ages 2 (yes, you read correctly) to 13 and learn not only the language but about American culture and traditions.

Today, VIPKid is one of the most lucrative online jobs in the market. There are more than 500,000 students and 90, 000 teachers within the company. Read this Forbes article about the growth and success of this wonderful company!

Where to start?

Great question! VIPKid is quite straight forward with their expectations and requirements. Before you apply, do you qualify?

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in any field. I am asked this question the most. No, you don’t need a teaching degree to teach with VIPKid. Although, having an educational background is a plus especially working with children. Which brings us to…
  2. Teaching Experience. As a mom and an educator, this is an easy yes but as an average person, this may not have been your profession. If you are experienced with children in any way (Sunday School, Daycare, babysitting, etc) you can apply. You must have at least a year’s worth of experience.
  3. You must be eligible to work in the US or Canada with a preferred (North American) English accent. Although there are people who work outside of these two countries, there are expectations of them as well.

So do you think you qualify? You can apply today!!
